ProtonVPN definitely is a stronger option for streaming, but you should still be prepared to cycle servers pretty often as new servers are continuously being added to the blacklist. Nearly every Mullvad server you try will be blocked, especially if you use Hulu or Disney+. I have subscriptions to Nord, Mullvad, and ProtonVPN and like the latter two the most - Mullvad is great for simplicity and private payment, but is generally the least compatible with streaming. It also allows you to duck under the “maximum simultaneously connected devices” limit, as the router only counts as one device, regardless of how many dozens fall under its umbrella.īoth VPN router types should also allow easy access to advanced configurations like split tunneling, which is helpful for making sure just your critical devices are covered while letting devices that get blocked a lot (smart TV’s or streaming boxes) or those that are extra sensitive to latency (gaming PC’s or consoles) are left alone.įinally, if you do insist on using VPN for streaming, Mullvad is not the best option. You can also get another router and flash it to use OpenWRT, which is slightly more complicated, but worth it if you are willing to invest the time (I’d recommend getting an Asus and using Merlin specifically, as it’s a fork of OpenWRT that is privileged with semi-endorsement by the manufacturer). GL.iNet routers offer easy VPN configuration, work well with Mullvad specifically, and allow you to set up both OpenVPN and Wireguard compatibility (with Wireguard being much faster and usually preferable). The best way to protect devices besides just your phone and computer is to use it at router level. And the error message you get is often labeled incorrectly you will frequently be given an error code for something completely unrelated but then find it instantly solved by disconnecting from VPN. However, I do have recommendations if you wish to do that for whatever reason, such as to see region-locked content. As another poster pointed out, you will encounter difficulties if using a VPN for streaming, in general.
